From Wanderlust to Artistry
The Journey Behind ‘Remnants of Italy’
In a poignant reflection of her past, the upcoming textile collection by Melise Smith serves as a testament to resilience and the transformative power of travel. What began as a daring escape from adversity in 2015 has now evolved into a captivating fusion of personal experiences and artistic expression.
“I’d just been through the worst couple of years of unfortunate events (life throws at you sometimes), I just needed to run away and did quite literally. I’d never left the country before. Couldn’t speak a word of French or Italian. Had no idea what to do once I got to an international airport let alone on my own with a child. What was I thinking. Clearly I wasn’t, I was broken and just trying to keep my head above water,” Melise recalls, reflecting on the tumultuous period that led to her journey.
As a single mother facing the aftermath of life’s relentless trials, Melise embarked on a courageous journey with her 10-year-old son, venturing across continents to forge a new path. The decision to uproot their lives and relocate to the enchanting landscapes of Europe was not made lightly. It demanded meticulous planning, interviews at the French consulate in Sydney to gain their visas, and unwavering determination.
Settling in the quaint town of Montpellier, nestled in the charm of southern France, marked the beginning of an odyssey that would leave an indelible mark on their souls. From the cobblestone streets steeped in history to the rich mosaic of cultures they encountered, each step was a revelation.
Their sojourn extended beyond the borders of France, leading them to Spain and eventually to the picturesque haven of Levanto, Italy. It was here, amidst the timeless allure of Italian charm, that Melise’s heart found solace and inspiration. The essence of the place, embodied in its people, architecture, and rich heritage, stirred something profound within her creative spirit.
What began as a mere fascination with the art of sewing and an affinity for collecting buttons from local markets blossomed into a full-fledged artistic endeavour. The memories of stumbling upon hidden gems while traversing the breathtaking trails of Cinque Terre, coupled with the allure of antique rosary beads, became the cornerstone of her forthcoming collection.
‘Remnants of Italy’ is more than just a series of textiles; it is a narrative woven from threads of resilience, passion, and the unwavering pursuit of beauty in the face of adversity. Each piece bears the imprint of Melise’s journey — a testament to the transformative power of wanderlust and the boundless depths of the human spirit.
In a world often overshadowed by chaos and uncertainty, Melise’s story reminds us of the resilience of the human spirit. From the remnants of our past, we have the power to create something truly extraordinary. As her collection prepares to make its debut, it invites us to embark on a journey of our own — one filled with wonder, discovery, and the promise of endless possibility.
