5 Herbal Teas for Optimal Health
By Maddi Brown
Whether you are tea curious or an avid tea lover, the benefits (both physically and mentally) of drinking herbal tea regularly are undeniable. In fact a recent study found that drinking a daily cup of chamomile tea leads to a 29% reduction in mortality.
Herbal tea has the added benefit of being hydrating and accumulating towards your daily water intake, plus with the herbal actions of the chosen tea blend – it’s a win win. Let’s take a look at some that you should include in your tea roster!
Dandelion
You may be familiar with this “weed” as it grows abundantly in the northern rivers region. But did you know that underneath the soil is one of the original superfoods? While the leaf or root can both be used for different benefits, its root is famed for its liver-loving and detoxifying properties. It is also considered a blood cleanser and can support healthy gut microbiome balance. A fun fact about roasted dandelion root – during war times the Europeans were unable to source coffee beans so they roasted dandelion and chicory root and you get a very similar brew, both in colour and taste – minus the caffeine that can wreak havoc on some people’s nervous system.
This tea is for those that are trying to reduce their coffee intake, brew the roasted root as if you would an espresso and add your milk of choice. Your liver will thank you!
Nettle
Stinging nettle, as it is commonly known as, is like a warming cleansing hug for your insides. This humble herb packs a powerful punch when it comes to its action-list and an added bonus, its flavour is pleasant and mild. Excellent for urinary-genital health and supporting optimal kidney function. Where nettle really shines is as a supporting pillar when combined with flavourful herbs such as fennel, hibiscus or rose.
Chamomile
In our opinion, chamomile is one of the most underrated herbs for its incredible anti-inflammatory and soothing effects. This powerful herb supports multiple body systems and may assist with digestive function, sleep, anxiety and depression. We love using it in combination with a mint or nettle base to create a soft and soothing brew.
Spearmint
This minty beauty is refreshing and therapeutic and can offer a bit of a change from the stock-standard peppermint that we know and love. Similar to its mint relatives, spearmint may support soothing of the digestive tract, and reduce things like bloating and after meal abdominal pain. It is also high in antioxidants so will reduce the impact of stress on the body. But where it really shines is through its support in hormonal balance, particularly in reducing the symptoms associated with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). Studies suggest that two cups of spearmint tea per day resulted in lower testosterone levels and better hormonal balance.
Green tea
Green tea has received much accolade throughout history, and for good reason. It is touted as being anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, anti-cancer among many more! In our research and clinical application, green tea consumed in moderation can help support brain cognition, it acts as a strong antioxidant and may support circulation, detoxification and blood flow. There is a caveat though, in that green tea is quite high in caffeine, in fact a cup of green tea contains more caffeine than the average coffee! So this one should be used with caution in people who are more sensitive to caffeine or experiencing sleep disturbances. It also doesn’t count towards that daily water intake and rather you should make sure you are keeping well hydrated when consuming it to offset the dehydrating properties of the caffeine.
The possibilities are truly endless! As a general rule it is recommended to always source organic herbs to avoid any pesticide contamination that may offset all the goodness you are trying to achieve. Happy tea time!
